Tromsø can offer mountains always covered in snow and open planes with the best possible cross-country skiing possibilities. Just outside the city-centre there are two ski-jumps and over 100 kilometres of cross-country tracks. There is also very good down-hill facilities with three ski-lifts and 2200 metres of lit alpine-tracks.

Tromsø Villmarkssenter (wildlifecentre) have three different tours on offer involving dog and sledge rides.
For the winter 1998/99 Tromsø villmarkssenter, run by Tove Sørensen and Tore Albrigtsen, have the following tours available:

Individual dog and sledge-rides:
The guests are picked up at the hotel and driven by car to Tromsø Villmarkssenter. Here you get dressed up with warm, suitable clothing and taken for an hour dog and sledge-ride to a lavvu (Sami type tepee) where you get served reindeer-broth. The tour last about four to five hours and can be made at any time of day or evening. When there is clear weather and northern lights you are bound to have an unforgettable experience.

Larger groups, seminars and conferences:
The second option is dog and sledge-tours in beautiful scenery with your own dog team or cosily tucked up in a sledge covered with reindeer-fur. There will be activities in the snow like tobogganing, making snow-sculptures and competitions. Later on the guests are invited for reindeer-broth with meat, coffee and traditional, Norwegian "lefse" - a type of thin bread wrapped around goats-cheese and sugar. Tor is more than happy to share his stories from expeditions over Greenland and Alaska, and the strenuous participation in "Finnmarksløpet" - where him and Tove had to rely upon their determined and loyal dogs as the only means of transport for 1000 kilometres across the mountains.

Overnight tours:
These trips, which includes an overnight venture in the mountains, is offered to both individuals and groups. Accompanied by experienced mountaineers you are given a dog team to carry you through wild and beautiful nature. After a night in a tent or a lavvu (Saami type tepee) you will hopefully feel purified and relaxed!

The group goes by coach to Ramfjord Camping (25 km from the city). Dressed in plenty of warm clothing we gather around the outside barbecue where seal- and reindeer-meat is served with garnish. .

Catch your own lunch in a lavvo!
The group goes by coach to Ramfjord's, approx. 25 kilometres from the city-centre. Here the ice lies thick on the fjord. From inside the lavvo erected on the ice, you get to try you luck fishing, and possible catch is barbecued and served on the spot. .

Every year there is a championship in mini-skiing and tobogganing at Chalottenlund, Finnvikdalen or Fløya. The participants can choose their means of locomotion and the tracks are not too difficult. In the breaks you are served Arctic beer from the local brewery.
The event is finished off with a banquet at one of the cities best hotels. Prices to "best fall", "worst time" etc.
