Tromsø Museum is known for its exhibition about the sami culture.
The exhibition shows the sami's cultural history from stone age to our time.

POLARIA
Polaria has an aquarium that shows seals, diving arctic birds and the eco-system in the ocean.
Here it is possible to learn more about research and activities in the arctic region and you can do some easy experiments yourself.

TROMSØ DEFENCE MUSEUM
Tromsø Defence Museum shows a historic exhibition of the second world war in an ex-German naval battery,
and an exhibition about the battle ship "Tirpitz" that was sunk outside the Håkøya island on 12th November 1944.

STONE CARVINGS
Take bus no. 1 from Prostneset, Tromsø.
In Skavberg on the Kvaløya island, just south of Straumhella, 27 km south of Tromsø city centre,
there are 4,500 years old stone carvings that tell stories about hunters' activities in the area.
NORWEGIAN TELEMUSEUM
Tromsø Broadcasting Station was built in the 1930's and closed in 1991.
The collection is built up around the 10 kW longwave transmitter from 1935, rebuilt in 1952.
The collection includes telephone exchange units, telegraph equipment, public phone boxes and old weather forecasting equipment.

THE POLAR MUSEUM
The Polar Museum is located in a restored warehouse on the quayside from the 1830's.
The exhibitions are mainly about the traditional winter hunting and fishing around Spitsbergen and in the Arctic Ocean.
You may also see extracts from expeditions to the arctic regions, especially Roald Amundsen's exciting adventures..

TROMSØ CITY MUSEUM
Tromsø City Museum is next door to the Polar Museum.
It is located in another historic building , built in 1789 on a rampart from around 1250. Here you will find
cultural, historical exhibits from the 1800's. Tromsø city's history is being told through extensive collections of paintings and photographs.

THE ART MUSEUM OF NORTHERN NORWAY
The Art Museum of Northern Norway have collections that reflect the development of Norwegian fine art through the last two centuries.
The museum also has an exhibition displaying contemporary fine arts, textiles and applied arts.

TROMSØ ART SOCIETY
Tromsø Art Society is a gallery for Norwegian contemporary art.
They have continual changing exhibitions, an arts and crafts shop and a cafe,
and they also arrange concerts and performances. They are in the same building as The Art Museum of Northern Norway.

THE ARCTIC CATHEDRAL - TROMSDALEN KIRKE
A masterpiece of architecture reflecting Norwegian nature, culture and faith.

THE CABLE CAR
The Cable Car takes you to Storsteinen, a mountain 420 meters above sea level. A magnificent view of the city and its surroundings awaits you.
There is a restaurant, Fjellstua, sami experiences, souvenirs and also a children's play area.

STRAUMHELLA
Straumhella - commonly named "Hella" - is on Kvaløya, 25 km from the town centre.
Here you will find old, wooden houses that originates from Tromsø and that since have been moved to this site for let during the summer.
"Hellastua" is the restaurant while "Bryggeloftet" is the café. This place is next to "Rystraumen", a strong maelstrom.
Fishing and camping is allowed for everybody free of charge. This is the most frequented recreational area for the inhabitants of Tromsø,
and the favourite fishing spot; the sound is "boiling" of cod and haddock!
Near Hella there is an area of 2500 - 4500 year old stone carvings.
These show the sami's activities in the area in the stone age, and contain several interesting figures.

SOMMARØY
If you pass Hella and go on for another 42 km., you will come to the two small villages Sommarøy and Brensholmen.
Here you will find a church, country museum and a local pub. Sommarøy is very well known for its long sandy beaches facing the open sea.
