Tromsø, Paris of the North, The Gate to the Arctic ocean

For several hundred years Tromsų has been a meeting point for people from different cultures. Tradesmen from all over came here to live when Tromsų, in 1794, gained its position as a city. A German traveller that visited Tromsų around the turn of the 19th century remarked on the city and its fashionably dressed women: "This has to be the Paris of the North!" - hence its present nickname.

"The gate to the Arctic ocean" is another frequently used name for the city. This comes from the many arctic expeditions that set off from Tromsų and also because the arctic fishing is an important part of the past.
Tromsų is still a popular meeting point. A modern city with a modern transport system. You can get here by plane, car, bus or boat. 58 000 inhabitants live here, 70 degrees North, in an area the size of Luxembourg. The council is the biggest in the country and covers 2558 km2. Tromsų has also got the words most northerly university.
The experiences to be had in Tromsų ranches from mountaineering in the midnight sun and fishing in lakes or the sea, to skiing under the northern lights or a visit to the worlds most northerly brewery pub, planetarium or outdoor-restaurants!

We wish you a memorable stay in Tromsų.
